We Love Laguna Beach

Architect David M. Parker has spent over three decades designing distinctly personal homes in Laguna Beach, guided by the belief that great architecture begins with listening.

Architecture, like other art forms, possesses a universal beauty that doesn't require specialized knowledge to appreciate. For architect David M. Parker, the measure of any building is simple: the experience you have when you encounter it.

"The experience you have when you see a building — that matters most to me."

Parker originally pursued art but shifted to architecture in college after recognizing how the discipline uniquely combines art, science, and mathematics. He developed an organic architectural style, drawn to the way color and light create warm, detailed designs that feel alive and personal. His approach prioritizes the individual client above all else.

"I want it to be unique and special. When someone hires me, they're going to get special attention to their particular desires and personality."

Parker established his Laguna Beach practice in 1991 and has spent more than three decades accumulating deep experience navigating the city's municipal approval processes. He stresses the importance of hiring architects who are intimately familiar with Laguna Beach's stringent regulations — a detail that can make or break a project before the first shovel breaks ground.

For prospective clients, Parker recommends maintaining confidence in their architect's vision throughout the challenging phases that inevitably arise in any build. His counsel is consistent: hang in there and stay it through.

Beyond architecture, Parker founded Sonatasia in 2009 — a theatrical performance group featuring music and dance held in private residences. It is a venture that reflects the creative community he has come to embody. When asked what he recommends for Laguna residents, he points to the Hortense Miller Home and Garden as a must-visit, and speaks of the broader community as a place that attracts creative people from every discipline.

"Laguna Beach attracts creative people. It's a special place for anyone who sees the world through an artistic lens."
