After her partner Stu Saffer's passing, Shaena Stabler took the helm of Laguna Beach's beloved community newspaper — and found a way to honor him every single day.

Stu News Laguna has emerged as the go-to source for community information among Laguna Beach residents. Established in 2009 by founder Stu Saffer, the publication presented an innovative approach: delivering news through an online platform designed to replicate the appearance and function of a traditional printed newspaper.

Shaena Stabler joined as a partner in 2011, drawn to Saffer's vision for what local journalism could be.

"I saw what he was doing and was really excited by the idea of an online newspaper that functioned like a real community newspaper."

For years, Saffer managed editorial operations while Stabler handled the business side. Their collaborative relationship strengthened the publication year over year — until Saffer's death in May 2017. Stabler subsequently assumed full leadership of the organization.

"The beautiful thing is, I get to honor him every day. It's Stu News. It's his name."

A Community at the Core

Stabler envisions expanding the Stu News model to other neighborhoods, always with human connection at the organization's heart. Beyond journalism, she pursues music as a singer-songwriter with released original compositions and videos.

"It's almost like an extension of Stu News. The music always felt like something that brought people together."

Following Saffer's passing, Stabler redirected her focus entirely to the news organization. She intends to resume her musical pursuits once suitable management support materializes. In the meantime, drumming has become a significant creative outlet.

What Makes Laguna Special

When asked what every Laguna resident should experience, Stabler pointed without hesitation to the Pageant of the Masters.

"It's living pictures, so paintings brought to life in an amphitheater setting. It'll bring you to tears, it's so beautiful."

On what draws her to Laguna Beach itself, she described the community's rare sense of inclusivity.

"You can be whoever you want to be here. It's the feeling of inclusivity that I feel when I'm walking. I certainly love that it's an artist colony, that it was built on the arts."

Her favorite local spot is Heisler Park, where public art lines every path.

"Everywhere you turn there's public art, and it's beautiful."

Stabler's life in Laguna — as journalist, musician, and community pillar — is perhaps the best embodiment of what she admires most about this town.

"You can run a business, and you can also be pursuing art. There are no boxes."
