Laguna Beach Animal Shelter - Protecting Unwanted Pets

The City of Laguna Beach Animal Shelter was started in 1975 by a group of dedicated volunteers called The Pet Responsibility Committee (now PUP Laguna Beach).

The group lobbied the city to purchase the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ old building on Laguna Canyon Road to use as a shelter. Today, the shelter serves the residents of Laguna Beach and Laguna Woods by providing temporary care for sick, injured, strayed or abandoned animals.

The shelter is funded by the city of Laguna Beach and supported by generous donations. Donations to PUP Laguna Beach fund the rehabilitation of local animals that require medical attention so that healthy pets can be put up for adoption. They are also used to help rescue dogs and cats. For more information about how you can contribute to the future adoption of a pet, visit PUP’s donor page.

The Laguna Beach Animal Shelter is life-oriented, meaning the shelter takes all reasonable measures to address an animal's medical and behavioral issues, so it can be re-homed. There are times when these issues cannot be addressed, and it is in the animal's best interest to be euthanized. Thanks to donations, the shelter is able to provide an extraordinary level of care, addressing issues most shelters could not.

Every abandoned animal that comes through the shelter is held seven days so its owner can reclaim it. As a small community, the claim-rate is extremely high at 80%. We have been very fortunate to receive support from the community, local veterinarians, Pacific Wildlife project, Bluebell Cat Foundation and the citizens with helping hands whenever there is a fire or flood in the canyon. We greatly appreciate the tremendous support from the community!

The Laguna Beach Animal Shelter posts animals available for adoption via petfinder.com, with a link on puplagunabeach.org. If you are interested in adopting any of the animals you see posted, call the animal shelter between 11 a.m.-4 p.m. to schedule an appointment, complete the application and meet the animal(s) in person. The shelter does not do same-day adoptions and uses an application process to do its best to match each animal with the most suitable home, so provide as much information as possible about your family and home life, and what you are looking for in a new animal companion.
